Few things are as relaxing as bird feeding

Looking out my window and watching the finches, chick-a-dees, juncos, cardinals, assorted sparrows and a plethora of woodpeckers cramming around my feeders, I can generally tell how cold the temperatures are outside. If the feeders are overflowing with a waiting gallery in the nearby trees, I know that it is very cold and most likely below 30 degrees; if the feeders have constant traffic, but not overcrowding, then I know it is mildly cold. This always makes me think about the number of people who enjoy bird feeding and bird watching.

Wild turkey rumors start about this time of year. For example, cougars are not being stocked in Midwestern states, even though your Aunt Alice said they were. They are likely following turkey and deer herds from western and northern states, and no, wild turkeys are not responsible for eating all of your quail and morel mushrooms.

John Arch Hardaway

John Arch Hardaway, 84, passed away on March 3, 2022 at his home in Leavenworth, KS. John was born to Nina and Carl Hardaway at his grandmother’s home in rural, northern Louisiana. The family moved to west Texas in 1943. John graduated from high school in Seminole, TX. He attended New Mexico Military Institute from 1955-1956 and graduated from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX in 1959.

Blankets for babies

The Basehor Community Library recently asked local citizens and organizations to create and donate baby quilts and blankets to be donated to the Kansas Children’s Service League as part of its Healthy Families program. The library serves as a community collection point and sends those blankets to the organization as the completed ones are received.
