Breyer exit could polarize high court

WASHINGTON – Associate Justice Stephen Breyer’s decision to retire this year won’t change the number of conservative or liberal justices on the Supreme Court, but some experts predict his departure could drive a deeper wedge between them.

The future is now – or really close – for electric vehicles

After more than 100 years, electric cars are returning and they seem to be doing a pretty good job of meeting our demands, at least for normal day-to-day activities like getting to work and around town. There are still a lot of issues with which to deal, but I have confidence that our engineers will solve them so that we can transition more easily from the internal combustion engines.

The challenge and reward of serving at the local level

One of the most challenging and most rewarding places to serve in public office is at the local level. No elected political office is closer to constituents both in direct effect on their daily lives and in access for their scrutiny. I served on the Leavenworth USD 453 Board of Education from 1983 until 1997, and again from 2012 to 2016. I also was appointed to the Leavenworth City Planning Commission in 1976 and served for 17 years.

James Dow Jacobson

James Dow Jacobson, aged 87, passed away on January 28, 2022. Dow was born on November 11, 1934 in Newtown, Missouri. He was the son of Bonnie Jewell Markel and Henry Francis Jacobson. He graduated in 1952 from Northeast High School in Kansas City, Missouri. Dow began his career in construction in 1958, and later founded Dow Jacobson Construction Company. In this chosen career, he built many homes in Kansas City, Lansing, Leavenworth, and Basehor, Kansas, including the subdivisions known as Adams Acres, Sherwood Forest, Hickory Ridge, Fawn Valley, Knollwood, and South 3rd Court. Dow was well thought of and he was proud that he was often the builder of choice in the area. He said he always built each home as if he were building it for himself. Dow was amazed that he could take a giant stack of lumber and turn it into a house. He received his last call to build a house when he was 80 years old. He truly loved his profession.
