The high school winter break is over and basketball games resume this week in Leavenworth County. Here are 10 boys basketball players to watch whose play has stood out so far this season: Trevor McBride, Sr., Basehor-Linwood – In his third season as the Bobcats’ starting point guard, McBride is averaging 10.2 points, 3.4 assists and 2.8 steals per game.

Wait, what? The phrases “no worries,” “new normal” and “circle back” should be left in 2021? Lake Superior State University released a list of the top 10 misused, overused or useless phrases submitted by people across the globe. Phrases spurred by the global pandemic such as “new normal” and “supply chain” are some of the terms people have grown tired of, according to the Michigan university’s annual “Banished Words List.” The school has received thousands of nominations since the list’s inception in 1976.

Mary Ann Knapp Borchardt

PITTSBURG - Mary Ann Knapp Borchardt, Pittsburg, died at the age of 101 on December 23, 2021, at home. She was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on July 28, 1920, to Frank and Lillian (Huffman) Knapp. Her family moved to Lansing, Kansas, where she was a 1937 graduate of Lansing High School. On June 25, 1939, she married Ralph Borchardt and was married to him for 52 years until he passed away in 1991. The couple moved to Leavenworth in 1948 and then to Shawnee in 1954. She worked in Layout and Customer Relations for Intercollegiate Press for 21 years. She held membership at Merriam Christian Church in Merriam, Kansas, for over 60 years. After moving to Pittsburg, Kansas, in 2002, she attended Countryside Christian Church. Mary Ann enjoyed gardening, sewing, traveling, baking and was an avid card player.

Brush site accepts Christmas trees

Now that the holidays are over, people may be ready to dispose of their Christmas trees. The city of Leavenworth's Brush Site will be accepting live Christmas trees for disposal free of charge.
