Board approves ‘premium pay’

Employees of the Leavenworth public schools will receive what a school board member referred to as premium pay during the second semester. During a meeting this past week, board members voted unanimously to pay classified employees an additional $10 per day and certified employees an additional $20 per day.

Henchek, Immaculata High School class of 1986 and current owner of Henchek & Son Stonemasonry, is a grandson of Edward and Mabel Gwartney Henchek, who had deep family roots in Leavenworth County.

Wildlife refuges: A new Christmas holiday tradition

A friend recently mentioned her family’s new Christmas tradition of viewing wildlife. After they opened presents and finished their Christmas meal last year, the family loaded up and drove to a nearby wildlife refuge. They were treated to watching more than 200 bald eagles with a couple of golden eagles in the mix. One of the mature bald eagles calmly ate a dead snow goose on the lake’s frozen surface, no doubt a welcome Christmas feast.
