LET’S ROLL WITH SISTER VICKI

The Deeper Window Association, in collaboration with the Council on Aging, offers Let’s Roll with Sister Vicki, a mobile respite program for people living with early to moderate dementia. This nonmedical program gives people living with dementia peer engagement, community service, physical opportunities, and social and cognitive stimulation followed by a delicious treat every Tuesday from 11:00 am – 3:30 pm.

COLLABORATIVE LEARNING

Lansing Middle School teachers Tracey Carney-Linn and Emerald Peters recently took a new approach to engaging students and making connections with text by using hexagonal learning. Previously this school year, students read three short stories involving peer pressure and the power of herd behavior. Carney-Linn and Peters wrote key concepts and vocabulary related to the three short stories on paper hexagons and cut-out arrows. The hexagon shape allowed students to connect up to six ideas. Students were divided into groups and asked to connect the stories and concepts using the hexagons. The lesson encouraged collaboration and cooperative learning skills involving reading, vocabulary, writing and grammar. Sharon Burns

PREP TIME 1 HOUR 25 MINS 8 SERVINGS INGREDIENTS • 1/2 cup white sugar • 4 cups all-purpose flour • 2 teaspoons baking powder • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 3/4 teaspoon salt • 3 cups raisins • 1 tablespoon caraway seeds • 2 eggs, lightly beaten • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk • 1 cup sour cream INSTRUCTIONS • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9 inch round cast iron skillet or a 9 inch round baking or cake pan.

Rocket is a 6-year-old Doberman and hound mix. He has a wonderful disposition and is smart figuring out puzzle toys. He would do best with a fenced yard at his new home. Rocket is definitely food motivated. He is neutered, vaccinated and ready for his forever home.
