Etheridge to be featured in music series

The Kansas Arts Commission announced that Grammy- and Oscar-winning rockstar/musician Melissa Etheridge of Leavenworth and 1994 Rolling Stone Songwriter of the Year Freedy Johnston will be featured in a new television series highlighting the diverse musical talent born and raised in Kansas. Produced by the Kansas Arts Commission in partnership with KTWU, a PBS member station in Topeka, “LG Desk Concerts” will premiere at 7:30 p.m.

Preservation continues at pioneer Greenwood Cemetery

Since 2021, the Greenwood Cemetery Preservation Commission has assumed the task of ongoing preservation efforts in the oldest existing cemetery in Leavenworth through research of early local history represented in its burials, discovery of living descendants and fundraising for the continued care and watchfulness of its sacred grounds. It is essential to also emphasize the magnitude of cemetery field work that is being conducted by a dedicated group of volunteers.

Kansas backs Trump for president after surprising survey

Kansas voters chose Republican Donald Trump over his Democratic rival for a third straight election cycle and appeared to defy a projection that the race would be much closer than past elections.The Associated Press called the race for Trump at 9:40 p.m. after he surged ahead of Democrat Kamala Harris, who had led in early results for nearly two hours after polls closed.

Election chief predicts record turnout in Kansas

Before early voting poll locations closed at noon Monday in Kansas, the state’s top election official already predicted record-breaking voter turnout.The Kansas Secretary of State’s office reported Saturday that more than 453,000 early ballots had been cast in person and nearly 123,000 of the 165,700 ballots mailed to voters had been returned. Secretary of State Scott Schwab predicted that Kansas’ total voter turnout will exceed the totals from 2016 and 2020.Presidential election years typically see higher voter turnout.
