New flowers planted at Children’s Memorial Garden

Parents tending to the Children's Memorial Garden at Buffalo Bill Cody Park spent last Saturday installing perennials in the newly built garden structure. The former location of the garden was razed, along with tennis courts and a handball court, as a part of a major park improvement project. The recently completed upgrades included the installation of new pickleball and basketball courts. The original garden was tended by the local Compassionate Friends group. Although that group has dissolved, the original group members still tend the garden. The relocation of the garden included several improvements. The new structure is two narrower 20-foot raised beds with irrigation systems installed. “It’s easier to reach across it,” said Liz Messinger, an experienced master gardener. Messinger brought with her a carefully mapped-out plan for where to place various perennials for the new garden. The city donated several large mums for the garden. Two memorial plaques received some restoration and upgrades, including framing around the marble plaque with names of the children honored at the memorial. Tending to the garden last Saturday were Carol Page, Messinger, Debbie McManus and Debbie Kirby.
