Program aims to address Lansing rental issues

Lansing city staff members got a tentative go-ahead to establish a rental registration program when the council discussed it at a recent work session.Though Josh Gentzler, community and economic development director, said he would bring a formal proposal to the Lansing City Council, probably in September, he and code enforcement officer Bill Linn and building inspector Dan Stade explained why it would be useful and what steps they’ve already taken. The aim, Gentzler said, is to make it easier to contact landlords as well as renters when problems arise, such as grass that needs mowing, junked vehicles, snow removal and others. Without such an inventory, it’s been difficult and sometimes impossible to contact the right people to resolve the issues. That’s particularly true if it’s an out-of-town landlord or one who has rentals organized under a shell company, which rarely has an address or other contact material.
