Les Novelettes celebrate 75th anniversary

Les Novelettes Club held their 75th anniversary celebration Saturday at Sunflower Missionary Baptist Church. About 80 people attended the fundraiser, which included a dinner and entertainment.Mayor Holly Pittman recognized the organization with a proclamation designating June 28, 2025, as “The 75th Anniversary of Les Novelettes Club.”Trey Johnson of Leavenworth High School and Deziree Gonzales of Lansing High School were this year’s recipients of the Les Novelette Helen Jackson Brown $1,250 scholarship from the Les Novelettes Club.Les Novelettes President Linda Horton said the organization was founded to provide educational funding.“(Formation of the club) was important then because Black students did not receive scholarships,” Horton said.Guest speaker Saturday was Dr.

Lansing City Council meets with county commissioners

Lansing City Council members and three county commissioners gathered around a table recently to discuss topics of mutual interest.Leavenworth County commissioners submitted a list of potential topics for the joint work session, to include the Eastern Gateway, the Leavenworth County Development Corporation, Kansas City Kansas Community College, Reinvestment Incentive Districts and Lansing’s new aquatic center.The Eastern Gateway, a K-5 addition that would start in Lansing and go over the river into Missouri, had been discussed in a joint session about a year ago. However, Commission Chairman Mike Smith said that project is on hold for now, because most of the Kansas Department of Transportation’s money aimed at Leavenworth County is going for a new Centennial Bridge in Leavenworth.When it came to industrial development in the county, it was noted that one location for an industrial park that’s been discussed is about 57 acres that belongs to the Department of Corrections.
