Fire department cadet program going strong after 20 years

When the Basehor Cabinet Shop caught fire on a hot summer day in 2001, it left members of the Fairmount Township Fire Department exhausted from fighting the fire and a big mess to be cleaned up. After a FTFD firefighter contacted his daughter and asked her to bring some friends to help with the clean-up, the department saw the value in starting a program that allowed high school students to lend extra hands with tasks around the station as well as a way to recruit potential volunteer firefighters.

Advance voters must pass through security

People entering the Leavenworth County Courthouse to take advantage of advance voting will still have to pass through a security check. Signs have been posted at the public entrances to the courthouse indicating “voting participants must pass through security.” The security checkpoints, which include airport-style metal detectors and X-ray machines to inspect bags, have been in place at the courthouse since last year.

USM annual economic impact estimated to be $63.4 million

The University of Saint Mary generates $63.4 million in economic impact per year on the statewide economy, according to a study released by the Kansas Independent College Association. “USM faculty and staff are committed to our mission and the success of our students, but it is important to remember that the University of Saint Mary also plays a vital role in both the state and the regional economies,” University President Sister Diane Steele said.

Former Kansas City Mayor Charles Wheeler dies at age of 96 Former Kansas City Mayor Charles Wheeler, who oversaw a period of rapid expansion in the 1970s and whose name adorns the city’s downtown airport, has died at age 96. Current Mayor Quinton Lucas praised Wheeler in a statement as a “statesman that all Kansas Citians, Missourians, and Americans could be proud of.” Wheeler died Tuesday night, said Lucas’ chief-of-staff, Morgan Said, who spoke to his daughter and grandson.
