County updated on former Cushing building projects
Renovation work for the new home of the Leavenworth County Council on Aging could be completed next week. Aaron Yoakam, buildings and grounds director for the county, provided an update about projects at the former Saint Luke’s Cushing Hospital building as part of a quarterly report he gave Wednesday to county commissioners.

Kris Kobach, the Kansas Republican who helped lead Donald Trump’s short-lived presidential voter fraud commission, wants to rid his state of ballot drop boxes and says as he runs for attorney general that discounting talk of fraud is “ignoring reality.” The expanded use of drop boxes for mailed ballots in 2020 didn’t lead to any widespread problems, according to an Associated Press survey of state election officials across the U.S. that revealed no cases of fraud, vandalism or theft that could have affected the results.

Sheds destroyed in fire in Lansing
The cause of a fire that destroyed two sheds in Lansing has not been determined, a fire department official said. The fire was reported at 12:40 p.m. Monday. The sheds were located behind 610 N. Main St.
Port Authority member discusses transportation study
A group working on a countywide transportation plan will be meeting people who have been identified as stakeholders before conducting public meetings next month. Greg Kaaz provided an update on the regional transportation study Tuesday during a meeting of the Leavenworth County Port Authority.
Commissioners review recognition sign concepts
City commissioners got a look at concepts for how Leavenworth can consolidate its recognition signs at Ray Miller Park. Currently, the city has multiple signs posted along South Fourth Street at Ray Miller Park, which is in the area of the Eisenhower VA Medical Center.
Corn Hole Tournament set for Riverfront Community Center
The Bags, Beer and POP Corn Hole Tournament will be held at the Riverfront Community Center gymnasium, 123 S. Esplanade St. in Leavenworth, on Saturday. Registration begins at noon and the tournament starts at 1 p.m.
PAGEANT IN LEAVENWORTH
The second annual Miss Kansas Volunteer Pageant was held in Leavenworth on Sunday. Miss Capital City, Paige Harding, second from right, was crowned Miss Kansas Volunteer and was awarded a $5,000 scholarship. Paige is a graduate of the University of Kansas and currently attends Washburn School of Law. Miss Leavenworth Teen, Bella Whitlock, second from le_, was crowned Miss Kansas Teen Volunteer and was awarded a $1,500 scholarship. Bella is a senior at Lansing High School and plans to pursue a degree in business. The Miss Kansas Volunteer Pageant is a statewide, service-oriented scholarship program seeking to empower young women through education and opportunity. Paige and Bella will compete in the national Miss Volunteer Pageant and Miss Teen Volunteer America Pageant next year in Jackson, Tennessee. Holly Pittman
