Man charged in shooting death of Missouri police officer A Missouri man was charged Wednesday with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the shooting death of a police officer during a traffic stop. Joshua Rocha, 24, of Kansas City, was being held on $2 million bond in the death of North Kansas City police officer Daniel Rocha, 32, who was killed Tuesday.
County approves tax abatement for buildings destroyed in 2019 tornado
When they met this week, Leavenworth County commissioners approved property tax abatement for buildings that were destroyed in a 2019 tornado. County Appraiser Bob Weber said the property tax abatement was being granted Wednesday under a change in state law that was approved earlier this year by Kansas legislators.
AMERICAN LEGION BOYS STATE
Two young men from Leavenworth County recently attended American Legion Boys State at Kansas State University and were named to high offices. Austin Davis was named governor and Roman Johnson was named secretary. They are both students at Lansing High School. City Commission discusses ideas for ARPA funds
When they met this week, Leavenworth city commissioners discussed ideas for how to spend more than $7 million in federal funding the city has received as a result of the American Rescue Plan Act. The city of Leavenworth was awarded $8.549 million as a result of the federal legislation.
Port Authority wants to meet with county
After county commissioners declined a funding request, Leavenworth County Port Authority board members want to meet with county officials to discuss a speculative building loan program. And county commissioners also support meeting with the Port Authority board to discuss the issue.
Missouri officer dies after being shot during traffic stop
A Missouri police officer died Tuesday after he was shot during a traffic stop by a suspect who then fled, officials said. Officer Daniel Vasquez, 32, was attempting to stop a vehicle for expired temporary tags in North Kansas City Tuesday morning when the car’s driver shot the officer and drove away, Clay County Sheriff Will Akin said.
