Leavenworth County commissioners reviewed aspects of a proposed $56.8 million budget this week during a work session. County Administrator Mark Loughry said this proposed 2023 budget for the county government would result in a 0.25-mill reduction for the annual budget’s property tax levy.

When they met this week, some members of the Leavenworth City Commission questioned how many electric scooters will be deployed in the city. According to information provided to commissioners, the company Bird has placed 190 electric scooters in the city.
The Leavenworth County Historical Society will host a major fundraiser to benefit daily operations for the Carroll Mansion Museum. The event will be held at the historic Riverfront Community Center on July 16 from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

People participate in a “vote no” protest Sunday outside of the Leavenworth County Courthouse. Demonstrators were encouraging people to vote against the Value Them Both amendment, which will decide whether abortion is protected under the Kansas Constitution. Firefighters respond to a fire at a duplex home Sunday on North 141st Street in the Falcon Lakes subdivision in Basehor. It is believed the structure had been struck by lightning. We have four animal shelters in Leavenworth County: Animal Control and Hope Rescue in Leavenworth, Leavenworth County Humane Society in Lansing and the Stray Facility on post. I have been involved with all of these shelters, and they do a tremendous job caring for surrendered or abandoned animals.
