Parade, festival and dedication scheduled to celebrate Juneteenth

The Juneteenth Celebration returns to Leavenworth on Saturday with a parade and festival organized by the NAACP and other community organizations and leaders. “The word ‘Juneteenth’ is a blend of the words ‘June’ and ‘19th’ because it was the middle of June 1865 when the enslaved Black people in Texas finally found out the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Lincoln two years earlier, freeing them,” said Joanna Scholtz, president of the Leavenworth NAACP.

Strong winds result in $10 million damage in Riley County Straight line winds that reached up to 100 mph caused nearly $10 million in damage in Riley County during the weekend, the National Weather Service said. The weather service in Topeka said the winds were equivalent to an EF1 tornado but did not have the rotation needed to be classified as a tornado.
