US inflation at new 40-year high as price increases spread
WASHINGTON (AP) — The prices of gas, food and most other goods and services jumped in May, raising inflation to a new four-decade high and giving American households no respite from rising costs. Consumer prices surged 8.6% last month from a year earlier, faster than April’s year-over-year increase of 8.3%, the Labor Department said Friday.
US lifts COVID-19 test requirement for international travel
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration is lifting its requirement that international air travelers to the U.S. take a COVID-19 test within a day before boarding their flights, easing one of the last remaining government mandates meant to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

Early plans announced for Camp Leavenworth
The third annual Camp Leavenworth will not take place until September, but organizers already have released some details about the community festival. Camp Leavenworth, which is sponsored by the city of Leavenworth, is scheduled for Sept.
Leavenworth Public Library kicks off Summer Reading Program
The Summer Reading Program is an annual reading celebration hosted by libraries across the country to encourage people to read and explore new ideas. The library program runs through July 31 and all ages from toddlers to adults are welcome to participate.
SCOUTS EARN EAGLE RANK
Eagle Scouts Robert Chaar from Troop 173 and Esa Lozoya from Troop 6173, chartered by the First United Methodist Church (FUMC), earned their Eagle Scout rank last month. Sen. Jeff Pittman recognized their accomplishments. Robert’s Eagle project was working with FUMC under the guidance of Ed Garven to provide safety and helping services for octogenarians. Esa’s project was building owl habitats under the guidance of the County Extension office. Esa is a founding member and the second young lady from Troop 6173 to earn Eagle Scout. She is a junior at Leavenworth High School. Robert graduated from Leavenworth and after attending summer camp, will attend Marine Corps boot camp and then into aviation maintenance. Bill Kidder
Online petition seeks to protect memorial
An online petition is seeking to keep in place a memorial for a Leavenworth teen who was killed last year by a drunken driver. The petition, which was posted to the Change.org website, is seeking to prevent the removal of a memorial at the northeast corner of Fourth and Kickapoo streets.

Take a vacation from your vacation
The dogdays of summer are upon us. This traditionally is a time of year when we try to unwind, a time of year when many families go on vacation. When families vacation, they often do not attend church services. This decline in attendance leads some churches to scale back services. Many give the choir and other volunteers at the church a break – a vacation. When 20% of the people do 80% of the work at churches this is a necessity.
