Protesters turn out for rally in Leavenworth

Over 150 people gathered in front of the Dwight D. Eisenhower VA Medical Center Saturday for a Hands Off! protest rally that was described by organizers of the nationwide event as a “National Day of Action” that mobilized hundreds of thousands of Americans in 1,300 cities nationwide.The grassroots protests were a collective effort of over 200 organizations, including the American Federation of Government Employees, ACLU, AFL-CIO, League of Women Voters, Indivisible, United Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association and dozens more.According to the Hands Off! website, “This is a nationwide mobilization to stop the most brazen power grab in modern history.

Lansing City Council approves rezoning of land

After comments from several county residents who submitted a protest petition, Lansing City Council members unanimously approved rezoning of about 146 acres across from Kansas Highway 5 and McIntyre Road. Council member Jesse Garvey joined the meeting through Zoom to make the vote 8-0.Prior to the vote, Mayor Tony McNeill noted that the supermajority required by the valid protest petition would need at least six council member votes, and the mayor would not be allowed to vote.
