Kansas governor vetoes Republican plan to ban mask mandates Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly has vetoed a bill that would prohibit government mask mandates in Kansas and curb the power of state and local health officials during outbreaks of infectious diseases.
Biden offers logistics support to ease formula shortage
Under fire from parents and politicians, President Joe Biden is offering formula manufacturers and retailers transportation and logistics support to ease the nationwide shortage of baby formula, as the administration works to bring the largest domestic plant back on line after it was shut down early this year due to safety issues.
Russia faces diplomatic and battlefield setbacks on Ukraine
Moscow suffered another diplomatic setback Monday in its war with Ukraine, with Sweden joining Finland in deciding to seek NATO membership, while Ukraine’s president congratulated his soldiers who reportedly pushed back Russian forces near the border.
Leavenworth Public Library conducts online survey
People can provide their input regarding what they like and do not like about the Leavenworth Public Library by taking an online survey. The survey can be accessed by visiting the library’s website, leavenworthpubliclibrary.org, and clicking on the Take the Survey link.
Students perform classic play on stage
The very first performance at the Basehor Middle School’s Performing Arts Center took place recently with a production of “Charlotte’s Web.” Sara Homan, BLMS reading and theater teacher, started the school’s drama club several years ago and it quickly became so popular that she was able to convince the administration to offer a theater class at the school. When a school bond was passed that included the Performing Arts Center, things fell into place for a location for the school’s band, orchestra, choir and theater groups to use the theater on a daily basis.
Sheriff’s Office hosts blood drive Thursday
The Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office will once again host a blood drive. The event is scheduled for 1 to 6 p.m.
Defendant sentenced to two years for domestic battery
A Lansing man has been sentenced to two years in prison for aggravated domestic battery, according to court records. Jorge Gomez, 35, Lansing, was sentenced Friday in Leavenworth County District Court.
Whittier Club to meet on Wednesday
The Whittier Club will have its last regular meeting of the year Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in the Jahn Room at the Leavenworth Public Library. All active and honorary members are invited to attend. The club will hold the annual election of officers. Doris Hund will review “The Chicken Sisters” by K.J. Dell’ Antonia.
