Board approves new public comment policy
When they met this week, members of the Leavenworth Board of Education approved changes to a policy that establishes the process for public comments during meetings. Before the vote Monday, board member John Goodman expressed concern that the updated policy does not provide people much time to sign up to speak once an agenda for a meeting has been released.
Kelly signs bill to ban local ‘sanctuaries’ for immigrants
Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly has signed a bill pushed by state Republicans to overturn three communities’ policies that could help immigrants stay in the state illegally.
Students win plaques at Technology Student Association conference
Leavenworth High School students received seven firstplace plaques while competing at a recent Technology Student Association state conference. The LHS team also returned to Leavenworth with a second-place plaque and three third-place finishes, according to teacher and TSA adviser Ruth Striggow.
At least 5 people shot at New York subway station
At least five people were shot and injured Tuesday at a subway station in New York City during a morning rush hour attack that left wounded commuters bleeding on a train platform. Fire personnel responding to reports of smoke at the 36th Street station in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood at around 8:30 a.m.
League of Women Voters to host meeting
The League of Women Voters will host a meeting for the public and members Saturday at 10 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church.

County awarded transit grant
Leavenworth County has been awarded a $525,000 grant to create a secure parking area for vehicles used for a Council on Aging transportation program. The project is one of 48 to be awarded funding last week through the state’s Access, Innovation and Collaboration Public Transit Program.
Defendant sentenced to three years for trafficking contraband
