147th homecoming celebration set for historic Nicodemus

The Nicodemus Homecoming Emancipation Celebration (NHEC) Planning Committee has announced the 147th Annual Homecoming Celebration in the historic town of Nicodemus, Kansas. The free event will be held July 24-27.The event honors the legacy of Nicodemus’ founders, formerly enslaved African Americans who established the town in 1877 as a haven for new opportunities in the West.

Letter-writing initiative supports military veterans

The Say His Name Foundation is launching Letters to Vets – Project 22, a letter-writing initiative providing heartfelt messages of support to veterans receiving inpatient PTSD treatment at participating VA Medical Centers.This new program encourages individuals, especially fellow veterans, active-duty service members, schools, businesses and community groups, to write letters addressed to “Dear Veteran,” offering encouragement and appreciation. Each month, hundreds of letters will be delivered to veterans in inpatient care, ensuring they feel seen, valued and supported during their recovery.“Connection is one of the most powerful protective factors against suicide, especially for veterans who may feel isolated after leaving the military,” said Michele Holley, founder of the Say His Name Foundation.

Administrator discusses rules of rezoning, use permits

In anticipation of constituents’ questions about three McIntyre Road proposals, Lansing City Administrator Tim Vandall provided what he called some education about the rules of rezoning and conditional use permits at a recent Lansing City Council work session.He had told council members at a previous meeting that three concepts for development alongside McIntyre Road would be forthcoming and he thinks residents may be confused and have questions about what can happen. When the first piece of property reached council members in November, landowners were seeking to rezone it so development could occur.
