As the omicron wave of the coronavirus subsides, several U.S. states including Nevada, New York and Illinois ended mask mandates this week for indoor settings, while others lifted requirements at schools. The White House says talks are underway about how and when to move the country out of the emergency phase of the pandemic, but in the meantime people are advised to keep following guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommending mask use in indoor settings in places with high transmission rates.

Several members of Basehor Velo, a group of bicycling enthusiasts in the southern Leavenworth County, participated in the recent Santa Fe Trails Annual Cancerthon. The group entered five teams with participants from ages 30 to 60 and the proceeds of the event helped raise more than $2,700 to benefit the American Cancer Society.
When they met this week, Leavenworth County commissioners appointed a new member to the 1st Judicial District Nominating Commission. County Commissioner Mike Stieben said he believes the selection can help shape the appointment of conservative judges.
