Act of respect

Each December, many of the white headstones at the Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery receive a fresh green wreath adorned with a bright red bow as part of the national Wreaths Across America program. On Saturday, hundreds of volunteers, family members, corporate sponsors and their employees braved the cold and windy morning to be part of that annual wreath laying dedication event.

EMPLOYEES OF THE YEAR

Austin McDaniel, solid waste collector, Charles Evans, solid waste collector, and Clay Seber, equipment operator 2, have been collectively named the Employees of the Year for the city of Leavenworth for 2021. McDaniel, Evans and Seber had been employees of the quarter for the second quarter before being chosen as Employees of the Year. In June 2021, a Leavenworth resident lost his balance and fell over a 4-foot retaining wall. He was seriously injured. McDaniel, Evans and Seber, all working a shift on a trash truck nearby, heard the resident yelling for help. They called 911 and provided first aid to the resident, helped control the bleeding and stayed with him until help arrived. The resident later contacted the city and said he had a compound fracture of the upper right arm and a severed artery. The surgeon was able to repair the bone and reconnect the artery. The actions of McDaniel, Evans and Seber likely helped safe his arm. MELISSA BOWER
