Board approves ‘premium pay’

Employees of the Leavenworth public schools will receive what a school board member referred to as premium pay during the second semester. During a meeting this past week, board members voted unanimously to pay classified employees an additional $10 per day and certified employees an additional $20 per day.

Walking the halls of their ancestor

When Leavenworth County Historical Society board member Whitney Davis Moulden invited Chris Henchek to attend an open house at the Carroll Mansion Museum recently, she was looking to connect present-day family generations with past history. Henchek, Immaculata High School class of 1986 and current owner of Henchek & Son Stonemasonry, is a grandson of Edward and Mabel Gwartney Henchek, who had deep family roots in Leavenworth County.

PATRIOT MUSTER

The Henry Leavenworth chapter and the Kansas Society Sons of the American Revolution recently celebrated their annual Patriot Muster at June’s Northland. The muster connected more than 80 members of the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution and friends with their Revolutionary War patriot ancestor and the colony they served. The colony of Pennsylvania won the muster with the most ancestors represented. The chapter collected toys for the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program and announced their participation in Wreaths Across America. PROVIDED BY WALT SCHLEY

ADOPT A PET

Layla is a young adult female terrier mix. She is grey with some white on her paws. She is friendly with all people she meets and knows the sit command. She will need an introduction with other dogs. Layla is spayed and up to date on shots. The Leavenworth Animal Control Shelter is full and needs help in getting dogs adopted into loving, forever homes. The shelter is located at 2019 S. 3rd St., behind Price Chopper. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, except holidays. PROVIDED BY CAROL TURNER
