City workers, neighbors turn out to help during blizzard

The crippling blizzard that hit the metropolitan area recently kept members of the Basehor Municipal Services Department working overtime to help clear the streets of Basehor. While the department is primarily responsible for the treatment and removal of snow during weather events like the area recently experienced, the newly established Parks and Recreation Department is also now fully staffed and assists with snow removal as well.

Number of tornadoes double in 2024 over previous year

Preliminary results indicate 2024 was a more active year for severe weather in Kansas.Scientists at the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, are tallying last year’s severe weather reports. Across Kansas, 89 tornadoes were reported, more than double the 39 tornadoes counted in 2023.The most powerful tornado to strike the Sunflower State for the year was the April 30 storm that hit Westmoreland.

Basehor library rolls out adult reading program

As the bitter cold of winter begins to rear its ugly head for the season, Basehor Community Library is offering a program to help pass the days when it’s just too miserable to leave the house.The library’s annual Winter Reading Program kicked off last week with the goal to encourage library patrons to read at least three books within the two-month timeframe of the program. As a bonus, readers who read five books qualify for a special prize awarded in a grand prize drawing.
