VA launches campaign to enroll Kansas vets in health care

The Veterans Administration is launching a new outreach campaign to encourage all eligible veterans to enroll in VA health care – including approximately 13,900 unenrolled Kansas veterans who served in Vietnam, the Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan. This campaign will include text messages and emails directly to veterans, public service announcements, paid advertising and events.VA is launching this campaign after reports of concerns from veterans about health issues – including mental health challenges and thoughts of suicide – potentially related to repeated blasts and head trauma (low-level artillery blasts, IEDs, missile launches, heavy fire and more).

County attorney appointed to pretrial detention committee

The county attorney for the Leavenworth County has been appointed to a committee to help implement recommended changes for pretrial supervision and detention practices in Kansas, according to a news release from the state Office of Judicial Administration. Todd Thompson is part of the 15-member Ad Hoc Criminal Pretrial Practices and Procedures Advisory Committee, which was created by the Kansas Supreme Court.

Fitzgerald gives back to community through the arts

Michaela Fitzgerald thrives on connection and community.The 2007 Lansing High School graduate has spent most of her life living in Leavenworth, creating and cultivating connections.So, when she graduated from the University of Kansas in 2015 with a degree in secondary English education, she did what was most comfortable: return to teach at Lansing High.“My mom was an elementary school teacher for 30 years and put in her time with the youth of our community. Teaching just seemed like a natural fit for me because of my enthusiasm for relationship building and lifelong learning,” she said, adding that her parents modeled the importance of giving back to her community.While Fitzgerald has since stepped away from the classroom to spend more time with her growing young family, she has not left behind her commitment to building connections in her community.

Annual Leavenworth Vintage Homes Tour set for Sunday

A significant number of milestone anniversaries occurred in Leavenworth, the First City of Kansas, in 2024 that serve to complement the annual Leavenworth Vintage Homes Tour, a celebrated holiday tradition in northeast Kansas. The Vintage Homes Tour, organized by the Leavenworth County Historical Society, has been offered to local and out-of-state visitors as a holiday tradition for over 30 years.

Quick action by local women saves man’s life

Two women credited with saving the life of an 85-year-old man got a standing ovation recently from everyone attending a Lansing City Council meeting.The two are Lansing Police Officer Jori Bell and Kim Bolewski, a nurse who lives near the 1000 block of North Seventh, where the two helped a man who’d been mowing. Police Chief Steve Wayman credited their quick actions and response for saving the man’s life, adding, “A job well done.” He said the man had been mowing his lawn and a Waste Management driver noticed that he had fallen into a ditch and called 911.Bell was dispatched to that location with the caution that the man was unconscious, and learned enroute he had stopped breathing.
