Pleasant Ridge High School girls’ volleyball has landed its new head coach.Lisa Gourley has been named the Rams’ new mentor, taking over a program that returns the bulk of its players for the upcoming season. Pleasant Ridge athletic director Greg List is thrilled with the way Gourley fits into the school’s athletic culture.“Her passion for the game and commitment to player development make her a great fit for our program,” List said.

Les Novelettes celebrate 75th anniversary

Les Novelettes Club held their 75th anniversary celebration Saturday at Sunflower Missionary Baptist Church. About 80 people attended the fundraiser, which included a dinner and entertainment.Mayor Holly Pittman recognized the organization with a proclamation designating June 28, 2025, as “The 75th Anniversary of Les Novelettes Club.”Trey Johnson of Leavenworth High School and Deziree Gonzales of Lansing High School were this year’s recipients of the Les Novelette Helen Jackson Brown $1,250 scholarship from the Les Novelettes Club.Les Novelettes President Linda Horton said the organization was founded to provide educational funding.“(Formation of the club) was important then because Black students did not receive scholarships,” Horton said.Guest speaker Saturday was Dr.

Unsettling news about mental health of mothers

In a recent article in the KC Star by Catherine Pearson of the NYT News Service, she reports that the “mental health of mothers in the United States declined significantly from 2016 to 2023, according to a large new study published in JAMA Internal Medicine.”“The percentage of mothers who rated their mental health as “excellent” dropped sharply during the study period.
