Conservative politicians across America are promoting state-level legislation aimed at preventing new wind farms from being built in their states. In Kansas, a conservative legislator from urban Johnson County has proposed three bills that would make it difficult to impossible to expand the Kansas wind industry.
Dear Annie: Please say something about the inadequacy of texting for true communication. My sister is addicted to texting and will no longer use email or the telephone to communicate. All warmth, tone of voice and laughter are lost. Often I can’t type a response to her first text without her sending me a second text, which makes for a confusing, nonlinear conversation. Miscommunication and hurt feelings run rampant.

When I teach about race in American history, I always begin the lesson with a simple question: What race am I? “White,” my students say. “No, I’m Jewish,” I reply.

As the regular readers of my column in the Times know, for the past several years in February I have had a column on the contributions that Black soldiers have made to U.S. military history.
