Focus on the real problems we face

To the editor:I understand that many people voted for Donald Trump to make life here better. Does it make life better to have scores of hardened criminals set loose to cause violence against anyone who helped convict them?Does it make life better that one of Trump's executive orders suspends funds for infrastructure? The improvements we saw on our local roads were possible because of those funds.And trans people, a very small part of our population, are not this country's worst problem.

Take advantage of the many Council on Aging offerings

Besides getting exercise through walking and bicycling by using our sidewalks and roads which are already paid for by our taxes, we also have access to what could be described as a unique source of health, at least for those of us who are older that 50 years old. I am speaking of the Council on Aging which is in the former Cushing Hospital building.I am pretty sure that it is the only type of facility like it in the entire state and probably in our whole Kansas City metro region and beyond.

Choose your role models by the ‘content of their character’

With the echoes of MLK day still with us, I am reminded of his quote about his dream and the character of people. “I have a dream that one day my four little children will live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” In our society, I have noticed that we are continuing to go away from the ideal of worthy and noble character.

Walk Kansas program slated to begin its 25th year

In the midst of thousands of Kansans rallying around a challenge to walk or roll a distance equivalent to the length of the state, Sharolyn Jackson believes one goal should always be kept in mind.“It’s important to have fun,” said Jackson, a family and consumer sciences specialist in K-State Research and Extension’s northeast region.Jackson is also the coordinator of the popular Walk Kansas program, which turns 25 this year.“The best physical activity is one you will actually do. There are so many spillover effects from physical activity that include being more productive at work, being more satisfied in your life, improving your mood and improving your outlook on life,” Jackson said.Walk Kansas is a team-based challenge that encourages people to walk, jog, run, roll, bike, swim or do whatever they enjoy doing to live more healthfully.
