Kansas board recommends ending Native American mascots
The Kansas State Board of Education on Thursday recommended that the state’s public school districts eliminate Native American mascots and branding to reduce their harmful impacts on students. The board approved a motion making a “strong recommendation” that Kansas public K-12 nontribal schools retire Native American-themed mascots and branding as soon as possible but within the next three to five years at the latest.

Boys soccer coaches from the United Kansas Conference selected all-conference teams this week and the squads were full of athletes from Leavenworth County. Basehor-Linwood seniors Cole Kramer (defender), Tim Sedlock (forward) and Tanner Graf (midfielder) were voted First Team all-conference.
Farris records 1,000th career dig for Jayhawks
Kennedy Farris, a Lansing graduate and junior on the Kansas volleyball team, recorded her 1,000th career college dig last Wednesday in a 3-0 sweep of rival Kansas State. Farris had five digs and two aces in the win.
Bobcats, Lions qualify for state
Basehor-Linwood’s unified bowling team is going to state. Kirstin Ussery, Audrey Bracken and Amaya Mendoza bowled a 676, including eight strikes and 14 spares, over six games Monday at Crown Lanes in Leavenworth to finished fifth at regionals.
Saint Mary cruises to KCAC cross country titles
Saint Mary cross country added two more KCAC championships to its trophy case. Saturday in Winfield, the men’s team won their 10th consecutive conference championship, while the women captured their sixth in the last nine years.
