The Leavenworth enworth Council on Aging Meals on Wheels els will celebrate March for Meals and the 50th Anniversary of the Older Americans Act Nutrition Program. The annual March for Meals celebration commemorates the historic day in March of 1972 when then President Nixon signed into law a measure that amended the Older Americans Act of 1965 to include a national nutrition program for seniors 60 and older. The ser- s - vices we provide are a lifeline e for the seniors of Leavenworth enworth County. Together, we can keep our senior neighbors well-nourished, feeling safer and more connected to our community as they age.
The Council on Aging has two pet programs to assist qualifying ing seniors with their pets. The Pets & Loving Seniors program (PALS) provides pet food as well as cat litter. The Pet-2-Vet program ram assists participants pants with veterinary care. Presently, we are assisting 90 seniors, 70 dogs and 87 cats. We are able to offer both of these e programs rams due to the generous donations of individuals and organizations. If you would like to purchase pet food or cat litter, ter, please drop it off at the Council on Aging, 1830 S. Broadway, M-F 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. We also accept monetary donations. You often won’t be able to see or smell illness s causing bacteria a in food. Spoilage bacteria causes changes in food, like color or taste. It will make your food unpleasant, but doesn’t usually cause illness. Food pathogens like Salmonella, a, E. coli and Listeria will not cause obvious changes, but a small amount is enough to make you sick. Some pathogens cause illness within a few hours, while others take days to weeks to cause symptoms.
The Deeper Window Association, in collaboration with the Council on Aging, offers Let’s Roll with Sister Vicki, a mobile respite e program for people p living with early to moderate e dementia. This nonmedical program ram gives people living with dementia peer engagement, community service, physical opportunities, and social and cognitive stimulation tion followed by a delicious treat every Tuesday from 11:00 am – 3:30 pm.
