*Old Age*
The son of Donald Roscoe Vought and Ruth Ardath (Derolf) Vought, he was born in Rahway NJ on 10 Nov. 1932 at 17:26 (5:26pm) or as he would gleefully point at – just in time for a martini. His father worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad resulting in frequent relocations. He attended public schools in Newark, NJ; New York City; Perryville, MD; Chester, PA; Pennsauken, NJ; and Moorestown, NJ graduating in 1950. In 1954 he graduated from Norwich University in Northfield, VT, married a woman he had known since the eighth grade – Dolores (Wagner) Vought, and entered the US Army in which he served for the next twenty three years. During that period, he fathered three daughters: Victoria who died in 1961, Cydney who died in 2009, and Donna who resides in Prairie Village, KS. He spent one year in Viet Nam, three years in Europe, one year in Iran, and six years at the Command and General Staff College at Ft Leavenworth. He also earned Masters degrees from the University of Louisville and from Boston University.
Upon his retiring in 1977 the family remained in Leavenworth. In 1984 Vought became a Department of the Army civilian where he worked, until retirement in 1995, in the then peripheral area of terrorism.
During the four decades from 1963 to 2003 he lectured to military and civilian audiences on Low Intensity Conflict, Civil-Military Relations, and Terrorism in twenty two states as well as Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom. In that same period he contributed chapters to four books and wrote a score of articles for professional and academic journals addressing those same subjects. Despite his idiosyncratic persona, he supported
Despite his idiosyncratic persona, he supported money charities and – as he explained – worthy causes over the years. While he was never a “joiner” he expressed satisfaction in being a founder of the Leavenworth Animal Welfare Society and a charter member of The Old Bastards of Leavenworth as well as the Silver Back’s Book Club. These organizations he claimed have unambiguous and worthy objectives. One helps foundling animals and the other keeps some dirty old men off the streets, at least occasionally.
In later years he encapsulated his professional life with two Latin phrases. One describes the effort – Vox clamantis in deserto (the voice of one crying in the wilderness) and the other the all to frequent result which he learned far too late in life – Veritas odium parit (Truth breeds hatred). He is survived by his wife (Dolores W Vought), a daughter (Donna Roth), two son in laws (Christian Roth and David Eike), and four grandchildren (Corbin Eike, David Metz, Dylan Roth, Carlin Eike Warren, and Donald Roth). For those interested in that sort of thing there will be
For those interested in that sort of thing there will be visitation and champagne (vin mousseux) swill at the Davis Funeral Chapel between the hours of 3 and 5 on Wednesday, June 22, 2022.
