Herman Ossie Rathman

Herman Ossie Rathman passed away on Friday, December 10, 2021.

Herman Rathman was born in 1941 where he has been a proud Leavenworth resident all of his life. He was considered a friend and role model to many people throughout his life where he was an example of perseverance, strength, and giving. The most important thing in Herman’s life was his family where he was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, uncle and brother.

Herman graduated from Leavenworth High School in 1960 where he excelled as a 3 sport athlete and later inducted in the LHS Hall of Fame. He then attended College of Emporia in Emporia, Kansas, where he played baseball, basketball and football and also inducted to the Hall of Fame. After college he was signed to a professional baseball contract with the Baltimore Orioles where he led double A Northern League with 32 home runs, retiring from baseball in 1967. Herman later worked for the Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary where he was the recreational manager until his retirement. Herman played with an assortment of world class softball teams from 1975 into the early 90’s as a top ranked Major Softball player winning 3 national championships.

Herman is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carol Rathman, three sons, Blaine Rathman, Grant (Vickie) Rathman and Stuart Rathman, his granddaughter, Justine Rathman, two sisters, Betty Newton and Sondra Lee Daniels, and numerous nieces and nephews. Herman was proceeded in death by his mother, Justine Alexander, his father, Ossie Rathman, one sister, Debra Alexander-Levite, and two brothers Lavert Robinson and Paul Robinson.

The viewing will begin at 11:00 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 18, 2021 at Sunflower Missionary Baptist Church, located at 1708 5th Ave., Leavenworth, KS 66048.
