LTC Marvin Kim Decker

Lieutenant-Colonel Marvin Kim Decker, age 69, died on January 16, 2022 at Select Specialty Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas. He was a veteran of the Persian Gulf War as an S-3 Operations Officer and was awarded a Bronze Star Medal and a National Defense Service Medal with two campaign stars.

Marvin was born on August 14, 1952 to Marvin and Lois (Seaman) Decker in Sodus, New York. After graduating from North Rose-Wolcott Central High School in 1970, Marvin attended the United States Military Academy at West Point and was commissioned upon graduation as a Second Lieutenant in 1974. On November 16, 1974, Marvin married Mary Jane Galvanin in Providence, Rhode Island, and over the years the couple was blessed with four children.

He valued his service highly and attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Army, serving within the branches of Armor, Cavalry, and Infantry. As part of his service, Marvin served overseas for the Cold War and Desert Shield/ Desert Storm.

Marv’s last active duty assignment was at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, working for the Center for Army Lessons Learned (CALL) where he served as one of its founding members when he was a Captain in 1985. He retired from active duty in 2002 and transitioned to civil service where he worked as a Senior Military Analyst for CALL until his death. During his tenure in active duty and civil service, Marvin was able to travel to different countries.

Marvin devoted his life to his family, nation, and the Army. He was an avid military history enthusiast and collector. His career allowed him and his family to travel the world. Well-liked by many, Marvin cherished his time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and many friends. During his free time, Marvin was a member of the Company of Military Historians, the Ft. Leavenworth Historical Society, and a volunteer coach for the Leavenworth County Special Olympics of Kansas.

Marvin K. Decker is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Decker; his children, Jessica (Brad) Boyer, Sarah (Josh) Padilla, Elizabeth (Michael) Levkulich, and Marc Decker; his grandchildren, Ethan and Angela Boyer, and Charlotte and Elaine Padilla; brother Murri Decker and sister Kelli Decker. Marvin was predeceased by his parents and brother Todd Decker.
