Military officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the totals are preliminary and could change, said the initial recruiting goal was as much as 60,000 this year, but more realistic expectations later put it at about 55,000. With one month to go, officials are predicting they will come in about 45,000, though it could get better if there is a surge at the end.

Wire reports Sale of Warren Buffett portrait won’t match $19M lunch bid The auction of a high-tech portrait of Warren Buffett is unlikely to match the $19 million someone paid earlier this year for a private lunch with the billionaire, but it will still raise a significant amount of money for one of his favorite charities. The top bid for the signed portrait has already topped $75,000, and the biggest bids are likely to come near the end of the eBay auction when it wraps up Tuesday evening on Buffett’s 92nd birthday.

Court of Appeals vacates resolution for sand quarry

John Richmeier Leavenworth Times Judges with the Kansas Court of Appeals have vacated a resolution for a special use permit issued to a company that is seeking to operate a sand quarry in Leavenworth County. The permit was approved by the Leavenworth County Commission in July 2020 for Kaw Valley Companies, Kansas City, Kansas, to operate a a surface mining operation in the area of 166th Street and Lenape Road.

Inmate walks away from LCF

John Richmeier Leavenworth Times Authorities were still looking Wednesday morning for a minimum- security inmate who reportedly walked away from the Lansing Correctional Facility. Michael Shane Stroede, 43, was placed on escape status Tuesday morning.

Lansing City Council discusses possible changes

Connie Parish Special to the Times Lansing City Council members discussed possible changes last week in several pesky items that sometimes come up – paved and gravel driveways, fence locations and grass that’s too high. Matt Schmitz, director of community and economic development, provided information from the city’s municipal code and unified development ordinance as well as regulations from surrounding communities.
